"A Christmas Carol" Narrated by Lionel Barrymore
« on: December 01, 2009, 05:31:59 PM »
"A Christmas Carol" Narrated by Lionel Barrymore with "beloved Christmas Hymns & Carols" sung by the Canterbury Choir.

Mr. Barrymore played in the radio production of "A Christmas Carol" from 1934 to 1951, and if not for a broken hip which left him wheelchair-bound, he would have played Ebenezer Scrooge in the 1938 film.  After the hip injury, Mr. Barrymore's arthritis worsened, permanently confining him to a wheelchair.  Roles were written to accommodate this condition, including his famous character, Mr. Potter, in "It's a Wonderful Life" (Which I own but still haven't seen.  Must see it this year.).

What, you're still here?  Go download it already!  Sheesh!

Thanks for sharing.  I have this LP in another of it's many forms.  Mine is the one that shows Barrymore holding a child on his knee in front of a Christmas tree.  The LP front cover is in artwork form not photographed.  It's the MGM Records version numbered PMS-32 Stereo.  I figured for sure it had been done in CD form so I never have shared it.

I alos have a Radiola Records version from the 1939 OTR Broadcast with Orson Welles narrating, and Bernard Hermann conducting the music.

Orson Welles and Bernard Hermann?  Now that would be something!

I'll share it if the King thinks it is ok.  I see no evidence of a CD release anywhere.

Amazon is a good one yes.  However on there just because a CD is currently for sale doesn't always mean it is still in Production.  I know I've purchased CDs from Amazon sellers that have been out of production for over a decade.  I don't know if people stockpile these things or what.

No the one I have is from the 1939 Broadcast on Radiola records.

I was going to attach an image of the front cover, but I see that option is gone now.

Here's a link to an ebay auction showing the LP I have:

Ahhhh.  I'm thinking that's THIS ONE.  Unless Barrymore and Welles did more than one.

Well they did do the OTR Show for several years.  I noticed in one of the reviews that they mention the CD on Amazon is from the 1940's.  They may have been mistaken though.  It's not clear in the listing what date this CD comes from.  You'd think they could have come up with some better artwork for the CD front cover.  Geesh.

I alos have THIS recording which is another great one.
