12/11/2005 – Christmas Children from Scrooge Original Soundtrack
December 11th, 2005
There are almost hundreds of versions of Dickens’ "A Christmas Carol" out there. And everybody has their favorite. This 1970 musical film, starring Albert Finney as Scrooge, is my absolute favorite. It’s dark and moody, but funny and touching. And the musical score is top-notch, by the brilliant Leslie Bricusse. The man’s been involved in the music for Victor/Victoria, Doctor Doolittle, Willy Wonka (the original) and Goldfinger!
There are several songs from this album that, had they been written 10 years earlier, would be Christmas standards today. Father Christmas, December the 25th, and this one–Christmas Children.
In the film it’s sung by Bob Cratchit to Tiny Tim and his sister as they walk through the streets of London, juxtaposing the Christmas fare that the poor will get compared to their wealthier neighbors. It’s true Dickens.
It’s a sweet song with a great melody. Gotta love it.
