12/9/2005 – Good King Wenceslas by The Singer Orchestra
December 9th, 2005
No, the cast of The Donna Reed Show do not sing on this album. They’re just the props for the cover. Some people used styrofoam snowmen, Singer went with TV stars….
Anyway, the Singer sewing machine company put out a few Christmas LPs back in the early sixties and this is from one of them. There are a lot of albums that were distributed by retailers, manufacturers and so on. And a lot of them were compilations or recycled other work (lots of companies used recordings by The Longines Symphonette). But Singer commissioned George Siravo to write arrangements for and record all the songs. I don’t know who he got for the "Singer Orchestra" but it doesn’t sound like anybody is playing a sewing machine.
Good King Wenceslas is a favorite carol of mine and this is a great arrangement. If you’re interested in hearing more of the album, go to the Member’s Share section of the Forum. Lynda posted it there.
