12-9-2006 Jingle Bells by Lawrence Welk and His Champagne Music Makers
December 9th, 2006
If you collect Christmas LP’s I’m sure you’ve probably come across this 4LP collection from Reader’s Digest. It’s a toe tappin’ accordion-packed delight of frothy Christmas joy (wow! that’s a sentence for the ages!).
A lot of these songs have been released on various CD’s, but unfortunately not the whole lot. Thanks to my friend Phil from A Lawrence Welk Christmas, I was able to learn which songs have not been made available in digital form. (You can go over to Phil’s site and take a look at a whole page that describes this great collection in detail.) I went through the list and decided that this great little instrumental of Jingle Bells should be more widely heard.
If this doesn’t make you feel jaunty, I don’t know what’s wrong with you.
And I have to say that Welk gets a bad wrap as being just this simple EZ Listening zomie. And I’ll agree his on-stage persona lacked a certain oomph, but listen to his arrangements and appreciate the quality of musicians and singers that he got to work with him. There’s a lot of creativity in his work and I hope that someday he will be given more credit for the quality of his music.
